There are two reasons to use Lync and not Skype for business. The first reason is that Lync is a native Microsoft product. In contrast, Skype for Business uses a third party solution called Skype. This third party solution is only compatible with Windows. Lync on the other hand runs on a server as a Windows Server. Therefore, if you are currently using Skype for Business to connect to your organization, then you must also make the switch to Lync.
The second reason is that it is free software. It does not require any purchase or licensing fee to use. This is a major advantage of Lync. Skype for Business is only accessible for people who are running Lync on their systems. This means that if you are currently using the free edition of Skype, then you will have to either pay a subscription fee or move to the paid service.
With these two differences in services, it is obvious that Lync for Windows is the better option. Even though Skype for Business is more popular, the free version of the software is more preferable. A point of contention in the world of technology is, however, how far companies should go in allowing their employees to use free software. Although Lync is not free, the team at Microsoft has made the decision that it is safe enough to allow the use of this application.
